Safety register

The safety register is one list of every incident, hazard and near miss, what was done about each, and whether the FAA had to be told. Find it under Safety in the Compliance group of the nav (web), or the Safety tile on the mobile home screen.

It is on for every organization by default; Tobren can switch it off for an organization, in which case the page says it isn’t available.

Anyone with at least the Member role can use Report a safety issue. The bar is deliberately low: the person who saw the hazard should be able to report it. Each record is one of three kinds: incident, hazard or near miss. (An incident can also be filed against a specific flight from the flight log.)

Open a record to see its details, including the Part 107 facts: serious injury, loss of consciousness, and property damage of $500 or more. An Admin or the Account owner works the record:

  • Status: open, investigating or closed.
  • Corrective action: what was done about it.
  • Determination: whether it is reportable to the FAA under §107.9, with an optional note on the reasoning.
  • Mark report as filed: records that the operator filed the report with the FAA. This is your own record of it; Tobren does not file anything for you.

Tabs show Needs attention (open and investigating), All records and Closed, and you can filter by Incidents, Hazards or Near misses. Two lines appear only when they are true: how many records were determined reportable with no report recorded as filed, and how many have not yet been assessed. A reportable incident with no filed report also raises an FAA incident report due alert.

Admins can Export CSV of the register; see Privacy & your data.

  • Nothing can be deleted, and a record’s original narrative can’t be edited. A safety record that could be rewritten afterwards is not a safety record.
  • An empty register doesn’t mean a safe quarter; it may mean nobody is filing. The empty state says what belongs there.
  • A workspace that is suspended can read the register but not add to it.
  • This is your record, not legal advice. Whether something is reportable under §107.9 is your determination to make.
